What are wocky words?

'Well, “slithy” means “lithe and slimy...you see, it’s like a portmanteau–there are two meanings packed up into one word.'
-Humpty Dumpty, Alice in Wonderland

The art of jabberwocky. Also known as portmanteau, wocky words are clever word combinations that mesh existing words to create a new definition by fusing the first part of one word with the last part of another. We’re all familiar with the everyday combinations- brunch (breakfast + lunch) and smog (smoke & fog), but we also think the world of portmanteaux is vastly untapped. So, we’ve taken on the task of creating new combos of our own and we want your input. If you’re having an argument in a bar, wouldn’t it be a bargument?

Here’s a challenge and invitation for all the creative word nerds out there. Wocky Words is an interactive site that allows you to submit and rate word combinations of your own and add to others’ submitted portmanteaux. As a wiki-based site, Wocky Words gives you the option of contributing new definitions, synonyms, or other features to portmanteaux that have already been listed. You’ll also be able to list other word creators as buddies, follow their activity, track individual words, and select from a variety of notification options.
